In such a machining apparatus, it is critical that the quality of the electrochemical machining operation is monitored so as to detect any defective portion in the workpiece during the machining operation. One of the most well known prior art methods for monitoring the quality of the electrochemical machining operation is to measure the workpiece current during the machining operation. In this type of monitoring method, the measurement of the current is made between the machining solution and the workpiece through a current-measuring electrode which is normally disposed in proximity to the surface of the machining solution. In general, an electric potential is applied between the current-measuring electrode and the workpiece to measure the current.
Another well known prior art method for monitoring the quality of the electrochemical machining operation is to measure the total current supplied to the workpiece through a constant current supply. In this type of monitoring method, the measurement of the total current is made between the constant current supply and the workpiece.
